This week, we begin Seattle’s 2012 budget process. And I think we have some changes you’re going to like.
One of my main initiatives as the council’s Budget Chair has been increasing the transparency and accessibility of the budget process. I believe that public input is critical to a successful outcome, especially in these years when we are continually making tough choices.
So far this year, we’ve conducted community conversations on the services and budgets of human services, public safety, and parks.
Now, I’m taking the next move: making the budget process even more transparent by taking the process online. Our online resources include:
- a guide to Seattle’s budget process;
- the budget schedule;
- budget documents database;
- and the very useful glossary of terms.
The public, and our councilmembers, will use this online resource to access budget documents, saving time and thousands of dollars in printing costs.
There are critical spending considerations before us and I hope you’ll join in this process of figuring out what we need to fund and what we might have to cut — all from the comfort of your own home or business.
What matters to you in Seattle’s Budget? Please don’t hesitate to contact me, and mark your calendar now to participate in our budget public hearings on October 4 and October 26. Both meetings will be held in Council Chambers in Seattle City Hall beginning at 5:30 p.m.
