She IS Running

Is she or isn’t she?

Time was when only my hairdresser knew for sure.

And now, after the drum roll, I am happy to announce I am running for re-election.

Yes, I know. I’ve heard all the press speculation that I might be too old to run, or that I am “slowing down,” but got to say there’s no one throwing these ageist barbs who could keep up with me at my daily aerobic class.

I love this job – and I bring a sense of reality, priority and good old-fashioned experience to the job of Budget Chair at precisely the time when experience is what we need.

What does experience get you besides a year older and a few more wrinkles? I know the history of Seattle and why important decisions have been made. Long ago I abandoned ego and concern over headlines. Instead I strive for solutions that make people whole and I see more value in cooperation than confrontation.

There are a few things I can do better than anyone else:

  1. As Budget Chair, I understand that during a recession, human services and care services must be a priority.
  2. I will not ignore two decades of neighborhood power. Neighborhoods are the backbone of Seattle and we need to treat them with respect and stand by them.
  3. I will continue to stand up for our libraries, our arts, the environment, civil and women’s rights, the First Amendment, reporters’ rights, and our diverse communities.
  4. I know business is a driving, positive force in Seattle’s future. Business is the only partner we have in making real, livable jobs for a more prosperous Seattle.
  5. And, I will stand up and challenge Mayor McGinn’s disingenuous opposition to replacement of the Alaskan Way Viaduct. This outdated, dangerous and deteriorating structure stands at the gateway to our city and must be replaced. While he may be well-intentioned, the Mayor’s obstructionism is purely reactive – and puts us all at risk.

The bottom line for me: No more apologizing for one’s life journey. It might just lead us out of the most depressing era of our lives.

What do you say? Want to join me in standing up for quality? Will you join me in my decision to serve the city with all I’ve got? To date we have 400 contributors, 200 others who have promised support, and one of the highest name recognitions of any of the current city council members.

C’mon aboard. Consider contributing $100 today, or whatever you can give, to launch my campaign this week. You can donate by clicking here. Be among the first aboard; I won’t forget you.
